Fellowship

About the Program

The fellowship is a one-year post-residency appointment at the Hamilton Glaucoma Center, Department of Ophthalmology, and Shiley Eye Institute of the University of California San Diego. With funding from the Optometric Glaucoma Society, the fellowship will enhance the skills of an outstanding optometrist seeking a career in academia or subspecialty practice. Beginning in July 2026, the fellowship focuses on providing care to patients with glaucoma while offering a deep understanding of glaucoma pathophysiology, diagnostics, and management using the latest ophthalmic tools and innovations. The program is enriched by a collaborative environment with 8 glaucoma specialists. Though non-surgical, the fellowship will involve responsibilities in both medical and post-operative care.

Clinical Experience

Clinical experience consists of participation in glaucoma faculty clinics as well as independent fellows’ clinics at the UCSD Shiley Eye Institute in La Jolla and at the UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest. Fellows work alongside faculty members at each site.

Educational and Scholarly Activity

With a California optometry license, the fellow will be proposed for an appointment in the UCSD Department of Ophthalmology as Clinical Instructor. Fellows are expected to actively participate in numerous didactic activities of the Glaucoma Division and the Department of Ophthalmology. The Glaucoma division has monthly journal clubs, lectures, and weekly resident/fellow teaching conferences. There are also weekly Departmental Grand Rounds presentation. In addition to clinical experiences, all fellows participate in clinical or translational research and will have the opportunity to present their findings at local, regional, and national meetings. Fellows also have the opportunity for involvement in ongoing innovative clinical trials.
